Quick Answer

Google Ads in Ghana lets you set your own budget and, on Search, pay when someone clicks. Start with a Search campaign targeting your town, a fast landing page and WhatsApp click tracking. Doctor Barns Tech in Accra sets this up through our digital marketing service, from GHS 1,500 a month, with your ad budget paid straight to Google from an account you own.

Google Ads in Ghana can be the fastest way to get customers who are already searching for what you sell, or the fastest way to burn cedis with nothing to show for it. I have seen both. The difference is almost never the size of the budget. It is the set-up.

If you are a Ghanaian business owner, you probably have some of these worries already. You boosted a post once, got likes, and no sales. Someone offered to "run Google Ads" for you, took money, and sent a screenshot of "impressions" you did not understand. You are not sure whether the money goes to Google or to the person. You do not know if people in Kumasi or Takoradi even search Google for your kind of business. And you have no idea whether the ads brought the WhatsApp messages you got last week, or whether those people would have found you anyway.

I am Dr. Barns, founder of Doctor Barns Tech, a web development and digital marketing studio in Accra. In this guide I will walk you through how Google Ads actually works, how to budget in cedis, which campaign types make sense for Ghanaian businesses, how to track WhatsApp clicks so you know what is working, and the mistakes that quietly waste most small-business ad budgets. Where I quote Google's rules, I link to Google's own help pages so you can check me.

How does Google Ads work for Ghanaian businesses?

Google Ads is an auction. When someone in Ghana searches a phrase you have chosen, such as "solar installer in Tema", Google decides in a split second which ads to show and in what order, and you pay only when someone clicks your ad. You set how much you are willing to spend; Google sets the price of each click through the auction.

Three things decide whether your ad shows and what you pay:

  • Your bid. The most you are willing to pay for a click, set by you or by Google's automated bidding.
  • The quality of your ad and landing page. Google rewards ads that match what people searched for and pages that deliver on the promise.
  • The context. The searcher's location, device, time of day and what else is competing for that search.

Google gives you a diagnostic called Quality Score, rated from 1 to 10 at keyword level. According to Google's Quality Score help page, it is built from three parts: expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Google is clear that Quality Score itself is not an input in the auction. It is a health check. But the things it measures are exactly the things that make your ads cheaper and more effective, so treat a low score as a warning light.

Here is the bit most people miss. Google Ads does not create demand. It catches demand that already exists. If nobody in Ghana searches for your product, Search ads cannot help much, and you should look at YouTube, Display or social media instead. If people do search, and you are not there, your competitor is collecting those customers every single day.

How much does Google Ads cost in Ghana?

Google Ads in Ghana costs whatever budget you set, because you control the average daily budget for each campaign. On Search you pay per click, and the cost per click depends on your industry, your keywords, your location and your ad quality. The real cost question is not "how much per click" but "how much per customer".

I am not going to quote you an "average cost per click in Ghana". I have seen numbers floating around online with no source, and click prices vary so much by industry that an average is useless. A search for an insurance quote and a search for a hairdresser in Osu are not in the same auction. Instead, use Google's free Keyword Planner inside your Google Ads account. It shows estimated top-of-page bid ranges for the exact phrases you care about, in your account's currency, for the locations you choose. That is the only cost-per-click number worth planning around.

How the daily budget actually works

You set an average daily budget per campaign. Google may spend more than that on some days and less on others, because it pushes spend towards days with more searches. According to Google's help page on average daily budgets, for most campaigns your spend on any single day can go up to two times your average daily budget, but your monthly spend will not go above 30.4 times it (30.4 being the average number of days in a month).

So if you can afford GHS 3,040 a month, set an average daily budget of GHS 100. Some days you will see GHS 150 spent. Do not panic. Across the month you will not pay more than GHS 3,040 for that campaign.

How to work out your budget in cedis

Work backwards from the customer, not forwards from the click. Here is a worked example. The numbers are made up to show the method, so replace each one with your own.

StepExample figureWhere your figure comes from
Value of one new customer (profit, not revenue)GHS 1,200Your own sales records
Share of enquiries that become customers1 in 5 (20%)Your own WhatsApp and phone records
Most you can pay per enquiry and still profitGHS 1,200 x 20% = GHS 240Calculated; aim well below it at first
Share of clicks that become enquiries1 in 20 (5%)Unknown at first; you learn it from tracking
Most you can pay per clickGHS 240 x 5% = GHS 12Compare with Keyword Planner bid ranges
Clicks you want in a test month200Enough to learn something
Test budgetAbout GHS 2,400 for the monthRoughly GHS 80 average daily budget

If Keyword Planner says your keywords cost far more per click than you can afford, you have learnt something valuable before spending a pesewa: either narrow to cheaper, more specific phrases, improve your conversion rate, or advertise somewhere else.

What you pay Doctor Barns Tech versus what you pay Google

These are two different bills, and you should always know which is which. Your ad budget goes from your card or payment method straight to Google, from a Google Ads account in your name. Management is a separate fee. Our digital marketing service starts from GHS 1,500 a month, as published on our pricing page. Be very careful with anyone who asks you to send them your ad budget so they can "pay Google for you". You lose visibility, and you may never know how much actually reached Google.

Currency, payment and tax: set it up right the first time

  • Currency and time zone are permanent. Google states that both are set when you create the account and cannot be changed later; to use a different currency you would need a new account. Choose deliberately.
  • Payment methods vary by country. Google offers automatic payments (charged after ads run), manual payments (prepay) and, for some businesses, monthly invoicing. Which currencies and methods are open to a Ghana-based account can change, so check Google's payment options tool when you set up rather than trusting a blog post, including this one.
  • Tax. Ghana's VAT rules cover digital services bought from non-resident suppliers, and the Ghana Revenue Authority has been moving collection to the point of payment. See the GRA's e-commerce tax page and ask your accountant how it should appear in your books.
  • Verification. Google requires advertisers to complete advertiser verification, rolling it out to everyone over time. Your business name and location can then appear in ad disclosures, so make sure your registered details match what you put in the account.

Which Google Ads campaign type is best for a small business in Ghana?

For most small businesses in Ghana, a Search campaign is the best place to start, because it puts your ad in front of people who are actively searching for what you sell. Add other campaign types only after Search is tracking enquiries and you understand your numbers.

Campaign typeWhere ads showBest for in GhanaWhen to use it
SearchGoogle search results, as text adsService businesses: clinics, schools, lawyers, builders, solar, logistics, web designStart here
Performance MaxAcross all of Google's inventory from one campaignStores and businesses with good tracking and plenty of conversion dataAfter Search works and conversions are tracked
ShoppingProduct listings with image and priceOnline stores with a clean product feedWhen your store and Merchant Center are set up
DisplayImage ads on websites, apps and YouTubeBrand awareness, remarketing to past visitorsLater, with remarketing lists
VideoYouTube and partner sitesProducts that need showing: real estate, events, schools, fashionWhen you have decent video
AppSearch, Google Play, YouTube and moreBusinesses with an Android or iOS appOnly if you have an app to promote

A word on Performance Max. It is powerful, and Google will often nudge you towards it. But it runs on automation, and automation needs data. If your account is not tracking real enquiries and sales yet, Performance Max has nothing reliable to learn from and can spend your budget on cheap placements that produce nothing. Earn the right to automate.

On Shopping: check Google's Merchant Center help page on supported countries and currencies to confirm that Ghana and cedi pricing are available for your account before you plan around it. You need a proper online store with product pages, prices and a product feed. If you are still selling through Instagram DMs, that comes first. Our online store development service builds stores with Mobile Money checkout that can feed Google properly.

How do I set up my first Google Ads campaign in Ghana?

You set up your first campaign by getting your tracking and landing page ready first, then building a tightly focused Search campaign around a handful of high-intent phrases, then watching it closely for the first few weeks. Here is the order I use.

  1. Fix the landing page before you spend anything. One page per service, fast on a phone, with the price or "from" price, a WhatsApp button, a call button and proof (photos of real work, your address). Sending ad clicks to a slow homepage is the most common way to waste money.
  2. Create the Google Ads account in your business's name, with the currency and time zone you will keep. Add a second admin you trust so you are never locked out.
  3. Set up conversion tracking. Track WhatsApp clicks, call clicks and form submissions as conversions. I show you how in the next section. Without this, everything else is guessing.
  4. Research keywords in Keyword Planner. Look for phrases with clear buying intent and a place name: "bulk cement price Kumasi", "private hospital East Legon", "car rental Accra airport". Note the bid ranges.
  5. Build small, tight ad groups. One theme per ad group, with a handful of closely related keywords. Use phrase match and exact match to start; I explain why below.
  6. Add negative keywords from day one. Words like "free", "jobs", "vacancy", "salary", "training", "pdf", "how to" and "cheap" if you are premium. These stop you paying for people who will never buy.
  7. Write ads that match the search. Put the keyword or its meaning in the headline. Say who you serve, where, and what the next step is: "Solar Installers in Tema. Free Site Visit. WhatsApp Us Today."
  8. Set your locations carefully. Target the towns or radius you actually serve. Consider switching location targeting to people present in the area; more on that below.
  9. Set a test budget and a bid strategy. Start with a budget you can afford to learn with for a month. Maximise clicks or manual bidding is fine until you have conversion data; move to conversion-based bidding once enquiries are being tracked.
  10. Check the search terms report every week. This shows the actual searches that triggered your ads. Add irrelevant ones as negatives. Add good ones as keywords.
  11. Review after 30 days. Cost per enquiry, cost per customer, which keywords produced customers. Cut losers, raise budget on winners.

Match types: why broad match is dangerous for beginners

Match types tell Google how closely a search must match your keyword. According to Google's help page on keyword matching options, broad match is the default for every keyword you add, phrase match is written in quotation marks ("web design accra") and exact match in square brackets ([web design accra]).

Broad match lets Google show your ad for searches it considers related, even when they do not use your words. With strong conversion tracking and smart bidding, that can find good new searches. Without tracking, on a small Ghanaian budget, it is how a law firm ends up paying for "free legal advice" and "law school admission". Start with phrase and exact. Earn broad match later.

Location settings: the Ghana-specific trap

Google's default location option is "Presence or interest". That means your ad can show to people in your target area and also to people who have shown interest in it, wherever they are. Sometimes that is exactly what you want. A real estate developer in Accra may want Ghanaians in London or Houston searching for houses in Ghana. A hotel may want travellers planning a trip.

But a plumber in Tema does not want clicks from someone in Toronto reading about Tema. If you only serve people physically here, switch to "Presence" in the advanced location options. It is one setting, and it can stop a lot of wasted clicks.

How do I track WhatsApp clicks from Google Ads?

You track WhatsApp clicks by creating a click-based conversion action in Google Ads and firing it when someone taps your WhatsApp button on the landing page. Then Google can tell you which keywords and ads produced WhatsApp chats, not just clicks.

This matters more in Ghana than almost anywhere, because so many sales start in WhatsApp rather than on a checkout page. If you are not tracking WhatsApp, Google Ads looks like it produces nothing, even when your phone is buzzing.

Google's guide to tracking clicks on your website as conversions sets out the method. In plain terms:

  1. Create a conversion action in Google Ads for website clicks, and choose the option for a click rather than a page load. Name it clearly, such as "WhatsApp click".
  2. Install the Google tag on every page of your website, if it is not there already.
  3. Add the event snippet Google gives you for that conversion to the page with the WhatsApp button.
  4. Make the WhatsApp button fire the conversion when it is tapped, before it opens the chat link (wa.me plus your number). Do the same for your tel: call button with a separate "Call click" conversion.
  5. Test it. Tap the button on your phone, then check with Google Tag Assistant or in the conversion's status in Google Ads.
  6. Close the loop by hand. A WhatsApp click is not a sale. Ask new customers, "Did you find us on Google?" and keep a simple tally. Over a month, it tells you how many chats became paying customers.

A good developer can set this up in an afternoon, and if you use Google Tag Manager it is cleaner still. If your site is built so that nobody can add tracking without breaking something, that is a website problem worth fixing before you spend on ads. Our business website design service builds pages with WhatsApp buttons and tracking ready from the start.

What about WhatsApp buttons inside the ad itself?

Google has message assets that let people start a WhatsApp chat straight from a Search or Performance Max ad. Google lists the feature as in beta, with eligibility rules including completed advertiser verification, and it does not list which countries have it. Check whether it shows up in your account. If it does, test it. If it does not, the landing page button above does the job. For more on running sales through WhatsApp properly, see our complete WhatsApp Business guide for Ghana.

What are the most common Google Ads mistakes Ghanaian businesses make?

The most common Google Ads mistakes in Ghana are running ads with no conversion tracking, sending clicks to a slow or generic homepage, leaving broad match on with no negative keywords, and giving someone else full control of the account. Each one quietly drains your budget.

Here is the full list I would check on any account:

  • No conversion tracking. If you cannot see cost per enquiry, you are not advertising. You are donating.
  • Accepting every recommendation. Google's recommendations tab and auto-apply settings are built to help, but many of them increase spend. Read each one. Turn off auto-apply for anything you do not fully understand.
  • Unchecked network settings. Look at the Networks setting on every Search campaign. If Search partners or the Display Network are ticked, your budget can go beyond Google Search itself. On a tight budget, start with Google Search only and add more later on purpose.
  • Wrong location option. "Presence or interest" when you only serve people in your town.
  • No negative keywords. Paying for job seekers, students and freebie hunters.
  • One ad group for everything. Your car-hire ads showing for "car spare parts" because they share an ad group.
  • Homepage as landing page. The searcher asked one question. Your homepage answers twenty.
  • Slow, desktop-first pages. Most of your visitors are on phones using mobile data. If the page takes too long, they leave, and you still pay for the click.
  • Ads running while nobody answers. Your ad says "WhatsApp us now" at 9pm, and nobody replies until the next afternoon. Use ad scheduling to match your response hours, or set up an auto-reply.
  • Judging too early. Turning off a campaign after three days because "nothing happened". Give a test enough clicks to mean something.
  • Judging too late. Letting a campaign run for six months without checking the search terms report once.
  • The account is not yours. A freelancer built it in his own account. When you part ways, your history, data and conversion learning go with him.

That last one deserves emphasis. Whoever manages your ads, insist on this: the Google Ads account is in your business's name, you are an admin, and the manager is given access to it. Not the other way round. It is the same principle as owning your domain and your code. Our comparison of hiring a freelancer or an agency in Ghana covers more of these ownership questions.

Is Google Ads or SEO better for my business in Ghana?

Google Ads is better when you need enquiries this month; SEO is better when you want enquiries you do not pay for per click over the long term. Most businesses that grow well use both: ads for speed and testing, SEO for durable, compounding traffic.

FactorGoogle AdsSEO
SpeedCan show the same day once approvedUsually months to build
Cost modelPay for every clickPay for the work, not the clicks
When you stop payingTraffic stops immediatelyRankings fade slowly, if at all
TestingFast: learn which offers and keywords convertSlow feedback loop
LabellingMarked as sponsored; some people scroll past adsNo sponsored label; you earn the position
Best forLaunches, promotions, seasonal demand, testingLong-term visibility and lower cost per lead over time

A smart pattern: use Google Ads to find out which keywords actually turn into paying customers, then invest your SEO effort in ranking for those exact phrases. Your ad spend becomes market research. If you want to understand the organic side, read our guide to ranking on Google in Ghana. And do not forget the free channel: a properly optimised Google Business Profile for your Accra or Kumasi location often brings local calls without any ad spend.

There is also a newer layer. More people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for recommendations instead of searching. Ads do not show there in the same way, so being the business those tools recommend is a separate job. We cover it on our page about optimising your business for AI search.

Which Ghanaian businesses get the most from Google Ads?

The businesses that get the most from Google Ads in Ghana are those whose customers search with clear intent and a location, and where one new customer is worth a lot. Think services, high-value products and anything urgent.

  • Professional services: law firms, accountants, architects, surveyors, consultants. One client can be worth thousands of cedis.
  • Health: private clinics, dentists, diagnostic labs, physiotherapy. Note that Google has extra policies for healthcare advertising.
  • Education: private schools, universities, professional courses, especially around admission seasons.
  • Hospitality and travel: hotels, car rental, tour operators, event venues, including searches from the diaspora.
  • Construction and home: builders, solar installers, borehole drilling, interior design, furniture.
  • Real estate: developers and agents, often targeting Ghanaians abroad.
  • B2B: logistics, clearing and forwarding, industrial suppliers, software, exporters.
  • Online stores: with Shopping and Performance Max, once tracking is solid.

Some sectors have stricter rules. Financial services, healthcare, gambling and political ads all come with extra Google policies and, in some cases, verification requirements. If you are a fintech or an insurer, factor in extra set-up time.

Who usually struggles? Very low-priced products where one sale earns a few cedis of profit, and businesses whose customers do not search for them because they do not know the product exists yet. For those, start with social media or video and come back to Search later.

Why I believe Doctor Barns Tech is the right partner for Google Ads in Ghana

Most ad problems are website problems in disguise. A slow page, a broken WhatsApp button, a checkout that does not take MoMo, a form that emails nobody. You can be a genius with bids and still lose money if the page behind the ad leaks. We are a web development studio first, which is why I believe we are the best web design company in Ghana to pair your ads with a page that converts. Here is what you can check:

  • Published prices. Digital marketing from GHS 1,500 a month. Business websites from GHS 5,000. Online stores from GHS 8,000. All on our pricing page.
  • You own the accounts. Your Google Ads account, your domain, your code, your data. If you leave, you take all of it with you.
  • Landing pages built in-house. We build the page and the tracking ourselves, so when the numbers look wrong, there is no finger-pointing between "the ads guy" and "the website guy".
  • Mobile Money built in. MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AirtelTigo Money checkout on our stores, so ad clicks can turn into payments, not just chats.
  • Real, named work. Sites and systems for Hollard Ghana, SIC Insurance PLC, San Marino Hotel, A75 Mobility, Manjaro Store and more on our portfolio of live projects.
  • An Accra studio you can visit. 111 New Town Rd, Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00, Saturday 10:00 to 14:00, and WhatsApp or video calls for clients in Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale and abroad.

Here is my risk-reversal for you. Before you spend a cedi on ads, ask us to look at your landing page and your tracking. If the page is not ready, we will tell you, and we will tell you what to fix first, even if the honest answer is "do not run ads yet".

Want ads that you can actually measure? Talk to our Accra team about your campaign, or call or WhatsApp +233 20 963 6158, and let's build a Google Ads in Ghana plan around customers, not clicks.
