Quick Answer

At Doctor Barns Tech in Accra, monthly SEO starts at GHS 1,500 for local SEO covering on-page fixes, Google Business Profile, schema, one blog post and a monthly report. A one-off audit and setup starts at GHS 3,500. Expect steady movement over 3–6 months, and walk away from anyone in Ghana who guarantees a #1 ranking.

SEO pricing in Ghana is all over the place, and that is exactly why so many business owners get burned. One person on WhatsApp offers “page one in 7 days” for a few hundred cedis. An agency sends a proposal in dollars with a long list of jargon and no clear deliverables. A third says “it depends” and never gives a number.

So you are left with the same questions I hear in our Accra studio every week. How much should SEO actually cost? What should I get for my money each month? How long before I see results? How do I know if the SEO person is doing anything at all? And the big one: is this a scam?

I'm Dr. Barns, founder of Doctor Barns Tech. We have been building websites and helping Ghanaian businesses get found on Google since 2018. In this guide I'm going to give you real numbers in cedis, a clear list of what a monthly SEO retainer should include, the red flags that tell you to run, realistic timelines, and a checklist for judging any SEO agency in Accra, including us.

How much does SEO cost in Ghana?

At Doctor Barns Tech, ongoing SEO costs from GHS 1,500 per month for local SEO, GHS 2,000 per month for our combined SEO and social media growth plan, and from GHS 2,000+ per month for full-service marketing that adds Google Ads management. A one-off SEO audit and setup starts from GHS 3,500. Basic on-page SEO is already included when we build your website.

Here is how our published SEO pricing breaks down. These are the same figures on our digital marketing and SEO service page.

PlanPrice (GHS)Best forWhat is included
SEO Starter1,500 per monthLocal businesses that want to be found in their city10 target keywords, on-page SEO, Google Business Profile setup and optimisation, local SEO and Google Maps work, FAQ and schema markup, 1 SEO blog post a month, monthly ranking and traffic report
Growth Plan2,000 per monthBusinesses that want SEO and social media handled togetherEverything in Starter, 20 target keywords, social media management with designed posts, 2 SEO blog posts a month, AI search optimisation, WhatsApp funnel setup, bi-weekly reporting
Full-Service MarketingFrom 2,000+ per monthBusinesses ready to add paid ads on top of SEOEverything in Growth, Google Ads and Facebook/Instagram ads management, 4+ blog posts a month, email marketing, competitor monitoring, weekly reporting

Ad spend on Google or Meta is paid separately, directly to the platform. Management fees and ad budgets are two different things, and any honest proposal shows them as separate lines.

No long lock-in contracts. Every plan reports leads and enquiries, not just rankings. That is the standard I hold us to, and the standard you should hold anyone you hire to.

Why SEO pricing in Ghana varies so much

The difference between a GHS 500 “SEO package” and a GHS 5,000 retainer is rarely the same work at different prices. It is usually different work entirely. Prices depend on:

  • Competition. Ranking a dental clinic in Tamale is a different job from ranking for “car rental Accra”, where many businesses are fighting for the same spots.
  • Number of locations. One branch in Osu needs one Google Business Profile and one set of local pages. A pharmacy chain across Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi needs several.
  • Content volume. Content is where most of the hours go. One well-researched article a month and four a month are very different workloads.
  • The state of your website. A slow site with broken pages needs fixing before any content will help. Sometimes the right first spend is a website redesign that protects your rankings, not an SEO retainer.
  • E-commerce versus services. An online store with hundreds of product pages needs category structure, product schema and technical work that a five-page service site does not.
  • Who does the work. A freelancer, a small studio and a large agency all have different overheads and different levels of accountability.

What should a monthly SEO retainer include?

A monthly SEO retainer should include specific, visible work every month: technical fixes, on-page improvements, new or updated content, Google Business Profile management, and a report showing what was done and what changed. If you cannot name what was delivered last month, you are not paying for SEO. You are paying for a subscription.

Here is what I believe a fair SEO retainer in Ghana should cover. Use it as a checklist against any proposal you receive.

Technical SEO

  • Google Search Console set up, verified and checked regularly for indexing problems and errors.
  • Site speed and mobile experience reviewed, especially for customers on mobile data.
  • Broken links and missing pages found and fixed or redirected.
  • XML sitemap kept current and robots.txt checked so Google can crawl what matters.
  • Structured data (schema) for your business, services, products and FAQs.
  • HTTPS working on every page.

On-page SEO

  • A keyword map: which page targets which search term, so pages do not compete with each other.
  • Page titles and meta descriptions written for what people actually search.
  • Clear headings and content that answers real questions directly.
  • Internal links that guide visitors and Google to your most important pages.
  • Calls to action on every page: WhatsApp, call, quote form or checkout.

Local SEO

  • Google Business Profile with the right categories, services, photos, hours and regular posts. Creating a profile is free on Google, so nobody should charge you for “access” to it.
  • Name, address and phone number consistent everywhere: website, Google, Facebook, directories.
  • Location pages where you genuinely serve an area, such as East Legon, Tema or Kumasi.
  • An ethical review process: asking real customers to leave honest reviews and responding to every review.

Content

  • New articles, guides or service pages built around the questions your customers ask.
  • Updating older pages that have slipped, which often brings faster gains than publishing new ones.
  • Content written for Ghanaian buyers: prices in cedis, Mobile Money, local places, local concerns.

Reporting

  • A plain-English monthly report listing the work done, with links you can open.
  • Search Console data: impressions, clicks and the queries that brought people in.
  • Leads: calls, WhatsApp clicks, form submissions, orders.
  • Next month's plan.

If you want to understand the fundamentals behind all of this before you hire anyone, our guide to ranking a Ghanaian business on Google explains how it works from the ground up.

How long does SEO take to work in Ghana?

Expect early improvements in the first one to two months and meaningful, steady ranking and enquiry gains over 3–6 months, longer for competitive keywords. SEO compounds. The work you do in month two keeps paying in month twelve, which is the opposite of ads, where traffic stops the day you stop paying.

Google itself does not publish a fixed timeline. In its guide Do you need an SEO?, Google suggests you ask any SEO what results they expect and in what timeframe, and how they will measure success. That is the right question. Here is how a typical engagement unfolds with us:

PeriodWhat we focus onWhat you should see
Month 1Audit, Search Console and tracking, technical fixes, Google Business Profile, keyword mapA list of what was broken and fixed; baseline numbers
Months 2–3On-page rewrites, first content pieces, local signals, schemaRising impressions in Search Console; more Maps views and profile actions
Months 4–6More content, updating pages that are close to page one, internal linkingMovement on target keywords; more organic calls and WhatsApp enquiries
Month 7 onwardsScaling what works, new topics, competitive termsCompounding traffic and leads; lower reliance on paid ads

A new website with no history usually takes longer than an established one. A local service business in a smaller city with few competitors can move faster. Anyone who gives you a guaranteed date for page one is guessing, or worse.

How do I spot an SEO scam in Ghana?

The clearest sign of an SEO scam is a guarantee. Google states plainly that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and warns against anyone who claims a special relationship with Google or offers “priority submission”. Add secret methods, no access to your own data and reports full of numbers that never become customers, and you have the full picture.

I'm not going to name anyone. I'm going to give you the patterns, so you can spot them yourself.

Red flags that should end the conversation

  1. “Guaranteed page one” or “guaranteed #1”. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Anyone promising it is either misinformed or lying.
  2. “We have a special relationship with Google.” Google specifically warns against this claim.
  3. Cold messages out of nowhere. “I checked your site and found 47 errors” on WhatsApp or email from someone you have never heard of. Google advises being wary of SEO firms that email you out of the blue.
  4. “1,000 backlinks for GHS 300.” Google's spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam, and sites that break those policies may rank lower or disappear from results entirely. Cheap bulk links can damage your site for months.
  5. Hundreds of AI-generated pages overnight. Mass-producing pages mainly to manipulate rankings is what Google calls scaled content abuse, whatever tool wrote them.
  6. Secret methods. “We can't tell you what we do, it's proprietary.” Real SEO is not secret. You should be able to see every change.
  7. They want to own your accounts. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics should be in your name with the agency added as a user, never the other way round.
  8. Reports with no leads. Pages of “domain authority”, “visibility scores” and screenshots of a few rankings, but nothing about calls, WhatsApp messages or sales.
  9. Submitting to “thousands of search engines”. Google calls this typically useless. It is filler dressed up as work.

Why the cheapest SEO costs the most

Say you run a hardware shop in Kumasi and pay GHS 400 a month to someone who promises page one. For six months, you get a report with screenshots. You do not know what was done. Then your site drops out of Google because someone bought thousands of spam links pointing at it. Now you are paying to clean up the damage before any real SEO can even start. That GHS 2,400 did not just fail to help. It set you back.

Cheap SEO usually leaves out the expensive parts: research, writing, technical fixes, and someone accountable who answers your calls. What is left is either nothing, or something risky.

How do I judge an SEO agency in Accra?

Judge an SEO agency by what you can verify: published prices, examples of work you can visit, clear monthly deliverables, reporting tied to leads, transparent methods that follow Google's rules, and whether you keep ownership of every account. A good agency welcomes these questions. A bad one changes the subject.

Google's own hiring guide suggests questions to ask any SEO. I've adapted them for Ghanaian business owners and added a few of my own. Ask every agency you speak to, including us.

  1. Can you show me examples of your work? Real websites you can open, not a slideshow of logos.
  2. Do you follow Google's Search Essentials and spam policies? The answer should be an immediate yes, followed by how.
  3. What results do you expect, by when, and how will you measure them? Listen for leads and enquiries, not just “rankings”.
  4. What exactly will you deliver each month? Number of articles, pages optimised, technical fixes, profile posts.
  5. What is your experience in my industry and in my city? Ranking a hotel in Accra and a school in Tamale are different jobs.
  6. Will I own all accounts and content? Search Console, Google Business Profile, analytics and every article written for you.
  7. Will you explain every change you make to my site? If they have access to your website or server, the answer must be yes.
  8. What happens if I stop? Notice period, handover, and confirmation that you keep everything.
  9. How do you build links? Good answers involve earning mentions through useful content, local partnerships, directories that matter and PR. Bad answers involve packages of links for a fixed fee.
  10. Who will actually do the work, and how do I reach them? A named person and a phone number beat a ticket system you never hear back from.

If an agency is evasive on more than two of these, keep looking. Our guide on how to hire a web developer in Ghana covers many of the same vetting principles for website builds.

Is SEO worth it for a small business in Ghana?

SEO is worth it for a small business in Ghana when people already search for what you sell and you can turn a website visitor into a customer. If customers search “plumber in Tema” or “event centre in Kumasi” and you are not there, someone else is getting that business every day.

Here is the honest maths. Say each new customer is worth GHS 800 to you on average. At GHS 1,500 a month, you need two extra customers a month from Google to cover the cost. If your website is already decent and people search for your service in your area, that is a reasonable target for many local businesses over a few months. If nobody searches for what you sell, SEO is the wrong tool, and you are better off with social media, referrals or paid ads.

When SEO is the right move

  • People search Google for your product or service in your area.
  • Your average customer value or repeat business makes a few extra customers a month worthwhile.
  • You have, or will get, a decent website that loads fast on phones.
  • You can commit for at least six months.

When to wait or spend elsewhere first

  • Your website is broken, slow or cannot take payments. Fix that first; our web design packages include basic on-page SEO from day one.
  • You need customers this week. Paid ads deliver faster. Our Google Ads guide for Ghanaian businesses explains how to budget for it.
  • Your product is so new that nobody searches for it yet. Build awareness on social media first.

Which is better for a Ghanaian business, SEO or Google Ads?

SEO is better for long-term, compounding traffic that does not stop when you stop paying. Google Ads is better for immediate visibility and testing which keywords bring customers. Most growing businesses benefit from both: ads for quick wins and learning, SEO for the traffic that keeps coming for years.

A smart approach: run a small ad campaign to learn which keywords actually bring enquiries, then build SEO content around those proven terms.

Yes. Good SEO in 2026 covers Google's AI features and AI assistants as well as classic blue links. The foundations are the same: crawlable pages, clear direct answers, consistent business details and helpful content. What changes is that you write so a machine can lift a complete, accurate answer from your page.

Google's own documentation on AI features and your website says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. In other words, if someone sells you a special “AI ranking hack”, be careful. The work is good SEO done properly: direct answers under clear headings, structured data, consistent name, address and phone, and a strong reputation across the web.

How to get started with SEO in Ghana, step by step

Whether you hire us, someone else, or try it yourself first, this is the order that works.

  1. Set up Google Search Console. It is a free service from Google that shows which searches bring people to your site and flags indexing problems. Keep it in your own name.
  2. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Correct category, phone number, opening hours, photos of your actual premises and a link to your website.
  3. List the 10–20 searches that bring you money. Think like a customer: “solar installer Kumasi”, “wedding cake East Legon”, “how much does a borehole cost in Ghana”.
  4. Match each search to one page. If you do not have a page for an important service, that is your first content task.
  5. Fix the basics on every page. Unique title, clear headings, direct answers, a WhatsApp button and fast-loading images.
  6. Publish useful content regularly. One genuinely helpful article a month beats ten thin ones.
  7. Ask happy customers for honest reviews. Never pay for reviews or offer discounts in exchange; Google's Maps content policies prohibit reviews influenced by payment, discounts or free goods.
  8. Measure leads, not just traffic. Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions so you know what SEO is actually worth to you.
  9. Review every month and double down on what works. Update pages that are close to page one before chasing new keywords.

Why I believe Doctor Barns Tech offers the best SEO value in Ghana

I would rather show you than tell you. Here is what you can check:

  • Published prices. SEO from GHS 1,500 a month, a growth plan at GHS 2,000, an audit from GHS 3,500. On our website, in cedis, before you ever speak to us. See the full price list for all our services.
  • No page-one guarantees. We follow Google's rules and tell you the truth about timelines. That is a feature, not a weakness.
  • You own everything. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics and every piece of content we write stay in your name.
  • Reports that talk about leads. Calls, WhatsApp clicks and enquiries, not just a list of rankings.
  • We build websites too. Many SEO problems are website problems. Because we design and build sites, we can fix the root cause instead of working around it. You can visit live work in our project portfolio, including sites for Hollard Ghana, SIC Insurance PLC, San Marino Hotel and the Manjaro Store marketplace.
  • A real studio in Accra. 111 New Town Rd, open Monday to Friday 9:00–18:00 and Saturday 10:00–14:00. Clients in Kumasi, Tema, Takoradi and Tamale work with us by WhatsApp and video.
  • Short commitments. No long lock-in contracts. If we are not delivering, you can leave with everything you paid for.

That combination of transparent pricing, honest promises and full ownership is why I believe we are the best web design and SEO company in Ghana for owners who are tired of paying for reports that never turn into customers.

What to send us for an honest SEO quote

Send a WhatsApp message with:

  1. Your website address.
  2. The services or products you most want to be found for.
  3. The towns or areas you serve.
  4. Two or three competitors who seem to show up on Google ahead of you.
  5. Whether you currently have Search Console and a Google Business Profile, and who controls them.

We will look at where you stand, tell you whether SEO, a website fix or ads should come first, and recommend the plan that fits. If the right answer is “not yet”, I will tell you.
