Quick Answer
A Google Business Profile in Ghana is free. Setting it up properly takes about two hours, and Google's verification review can take up to five working days. To rank on Google Maps in Accra or Kumasi you need the right primary category, an accurate address pin, genuine reviews and a website that matches your listing. Doctor Barns Tech in Accra runs ongoing local SEO from GHS 1,500 a month.
If you run a shop, clinic, salon, school, hotel or office, your Google Business Profile in Ghana is the single most valuable free listing you will ever own, and most owners I meet in Accra are either not using it or using it wrong. Let me guess what's in your head right now. "I created one years ago and nobody calls." "Google sent a postcard that never arrived." "My competitor across the road shows up on Google Maps and I don't, even though I've been here longer." "Someone offered to get me 200 five-star reviews for GHS 500 — is that a good idea?" "A freelancer set it up, then disappeared with the login."
These are the questions owners bring to our studio on New Town Road. So this guide is the full playbook I use with clients: how Google actually decides who appears on the map, how to set up and verify a profile from Ghana, what to do about addresses when your street has no name, how to get reviews without breaking Google's rules, and the mistakes that get Ghanaian profiles suspended. No theory for the sake of it. Steps you can do this week.
One promise before we start: I won't sell you magic. Google says plainly that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. What you can do is give Google clearer, more trustworthy information than the business next door. That's the whole game.
What is a Google Business Profile, and why does it matter so much in Ghana?
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business name, location pin, phone number, opening hours, photos and reviews on Google Search and Google Maps. It is what appears when someone types "pharmacy near me" in East Legon or "printing shop Adum Kumasi" and sees three businesses on a map before any website.
Why does it matter more here than in many countries? Because of how Ghanaians search. Most of your customers are on a phone, often on mobile data, often in a trotro or a taxi, and they want three things fast: are you open, where exactly are you, and can I call or WhatsApp you now. The map pack answers all three in one glance. Many of them will never scroll down to the website results at all.
There's a second reason. Our addressing has historically been landmark-based: "after the Total filling station, second left, opposite the blue church". Google Maps has become the way people find a place they've never been to. If your pin is wrong, or you don't have one, customers literally can't find your door. Picture a customer standing in the wrong lane in Osu, phoning a business whose pin is 400 metres off. That sale is gone.
And there's a third, newer reason. AI assistants increasingly answer local questions too. Google's own guidance on AI search says Business Profiles can help your products and services be visible in AI responses as well as normal search results. I cover that side in detail in my guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants.
Is a Google Business Profile free in Ghana?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing. Google does not charge a listing fee, and nobody can sell you an "official" or "premium" version of it.
So where does money come in? In three places:
- Your time. A proper first setup — categories, description, hours, photos, products or services, attributes — is roughly two hours if you have everything ready. Keeping it alive is 20–30 minutes a week.
- The website it points to. A profile with no website, or a website that's slow, broken or says a different address, holds you back. That's where a real build cost sits.
- Help, if you hire it. Ongoing local SEO from an agency is a monthly service. Ours starts from GHS 1,500 a month.
Here is an honest comparison of the routes Ghanaian owners usually take.
| Route | Typical cost | What you get | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | Free (your time) | Full control, slow learning curve | Wrong category, wrong pin, profile left to go stale |
| Freelancer "setup" job | Varies widely | A profile created and handed over | Freelancer keeps ownership of the login; no ongoing work; sometimes fake reviews |
| Doctor Barns Tech local SEO | From GHS 1,500/month | Setup or clean-up, verification support, monthly posts, review system, website fixes, reporting | Monthly commitment — you should judge us on calls and directions requests, not promises |
| New website plus profile | Website from GHS 5,000 (Starter) or GHS 6,000 (Professional) | A site that backs up your listing, first year of hosting and domain included | Takes 2–5 weeks to launch |

How does Google decide who ranks on Google Maps in Accra?
Google ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. That isn't my opinion; it is written in Google's own help article on how to improve your local ranking.
- Relevance — how well your profile matches what the person searched. Complete, detailed information helps Google understand what you do.
- Distance — how far you are from the searcher, or from the place named in the search ("in Tema", "near Achimota Mall").
- Prominence — how well-known your business is. Google says this draws on information from across the web, including links to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help.
Read those three again, because they tell you what you can and can't control. You can't move your shop closer to every customer. Distance is fixed. You can make your profile more relevant, and you can make your business more prominent. Everything in this guide attacks those two.
Here is what this means in practice. Say you run a pharmacy in Madina. A customer standing 200 metres away will probably see you whatever you do. A customer two kilometres away in Adenta will see you only if your profile is clearly a pharmacy, verified, open at that hour, and better reviewed and better known than the pharmacies closer to them. That's the gap good local SEO closes.
Google is explicit that you cannot request or pay for a better local ranking. Anyone who says they have a "Google partner" route to put you at the top of the map is selling you a story.
How do I set up a Google Business Profile in Ghana, step by step?
Go to business.google.com, sign in with a Google account the business owns, and follow the prompts. Before you start, gather everything in this checklist so you do it once and do it right.
What you need ready before you start
- A Google account the business controls — not your nephew's, not the freelancer's. I suggest a dedicated Gmail address that the owner knows the password to.
- Your exact real-world business name, as it appears on your signboard and receipts.
- Your street address plus a landmark, and your GhanaPostGPS digital address.
- A phone number the business answers during opening hours. Ideally the same number on your WhatsApp Business.
- Your website address (if you have one).
- Opening hours, including Saturday and Sunday.
- At least 10 real photos: outside the building with the signboard, inside, your team at work, your products.
- A short list of your main services or products with prices in cedis where you're comfortable sharing them.
The setup process
- Search for your business first. On Google Maps, search your name. If a listing already exists (customers sometimes create them), claim it instead of creating a duplicate. Duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google.
- Enter your business name exactly. No "Best", no "Accra", no "Cheap Laptops" added. More on why below.
- Choose your primary category. This is the most important ranking choice you'll make. Pick what your business is.
- Decide: storefront or service-area business. If customers come to you, add your address. If you go to customers (plumbers, caterers, mobile mechanics, cleaners), set a service area and hide your address.
- Place your pin precisely. Zoom right in and drag the pin onto your actual entrance. Don't trust the automatic placement.
- Add phone and website. Use a number the business controls and a website that represents this location.
- Verify. Google will offer you one or more verification methods. Prepare before you start (next section).
- Complete everything else. Hours, description, services, products, attributes, photos, opening date. A half-filled profile looks half-alive.
- Add managers, not shared passwords. If staff or an agency help you, add them as managers inside the profile. You remain the owner and can remove them any time.
That last step is the one that saves people from the freelancer who disappears. Never give anyone your Google password. Give them manager access. If they vanish, you remove them in thirty seconds.
How do I verify my Google Business Profile in Ghana?
Google chooses which verification methods you are offered, and you can't change them. According to Google's verification help page, the options can include phone or text, email, a live video call, a video recording or a postcard, and you may need more than one. After you finish, Google says its review can take up to five working days.
Here's how I prepare clients for each.
Video recording or live video call
Google says that if your business is eligible for video verification, it recommends using it. For a live video call, Google asks you to show three things: your location, your business, and proof that you manage it. In Ghanaian terms, that means:
- Location: start outside. Show your signboard, then pan to a nearby landmark or business — the filling station, the bank branch, the street sign if your road has one. Google mentions outside signs, nearby businesses or a street sign.
- Business: walk in and show your products, branded equipment, uniforms, menus or marketing materials.
- Management proof: show staff-only areas, open a locked door or the till with your keys, or show non-sensitive business documents.
Practical tips: film in daylight, keep the camera steady, don't cut the video halfway, and make sure your signboard matches the name on the profile exactly. If your signboard says "Ama's Kitchen" and your profile says "Ama's Kitchen Restaurant East Legon Best Jollof", expect trouble. Live calls only happen during your listed opening hours, so set your hours correctly first.
Postcard
If you're offered a postcard, Google says most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. Two warnings straight from Google: don't edit your name, address or category while you wait, and don't request a new code, because that cancels the one already in the post. If postal delivery to your area is unreliable, check whether another method is available before choosing this one.
Phone, text or email
If offered, these are the quickest. The phone must be able to receive a call or text directly — Google notes that automated phone menus won't receive the code.
The shortcut few people know
Google mentions that some profiles can verify instantly, for example where the website is already verified in Google Search Console. That's one more reason to have a proper website connected to Search Console before you create your profile.
What address should I use if my street has no name? (Ghana Post GPS and landmarks)
Use the address your customers would recognise, add your GhanaPostGPS digital address, and then make sure the map pin sits exactly on your entrance. The pin matters more than the wording.
Ghana's national digital addressing system, GhanaPostGPS, was launched in October 2017. It divides the country into small grid squares (5m by 5m) and gives each one a unique code in a format like GA-543-0125. You can generate yours with the free GhanaPostGPS app by standing at your property.
How I recommend using it:
- Street address line: the road name if there is one ("New Town Road"), plus the area and city.
- GhanaPostGPS code: include it in your address details where the form allows, on your website contact page and in your profile description, so the same code appears everywhere.
- Landmark: put it in your description and on your website ("opposite the Kotobabi police station"), not jammed into the address field.
- Pin: drag it onto the actual gate or door. Check it in satellite view.
What Google won't accept
Google's guidelines for representing your business are strict here. P.O. boxes are not acceptable. Virtual offices are not eligible. A co-working desk only qualifies if there's clear signage, you receive customers there during business hours, and your own staff are there during those hours.
Service-area businesses: hide your home address
If you serve customers at their location — a caterer in Spintex, an AC technician in Kumasi, a cleaning company in Tema — and you don't receive customers at your premises, you should hide your address and set a service area. Google says that area generally shouldn't extend beyond about two hours' driving time from where you're based. So a Tema-based plumber listing "all of Ghana" is asking to be ignored. List Tema, Community 1 to 25, Spintex, Sakumono and the areas you genuinely serve.
Which Google Business Profile category should I choose?
Choose the most specific primary category that describes what your business is, then add as few secondary categories as you need. Google's guidelines say to use as few categories as possible and to pick ones that complete the sentence "This business IS a…", not a list of everything you sell.
Your primary category carries the most weight. Getting it wrong is the most common reason a good business is invisible for its main search.
| Business | Weak primary category | Stronger primary category | Sensible secondary categories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jollof and grills spot in Osu | Restaurant | The specific cuisine or restaurant type that fits best | Takeout or delivery-type categories if accurate |
| Phone repair shop, Kwame Nkrumah Circle | Electronics store | Mobile phone repair shop | Cell phone store (only if you sell phones) |
| Private clinic, Tamale | Health | Medical clinic | Specific specialities you genuinely offer |
| Basic school, Takoradi | School | The specific school level that applies | Nursery-type category if you run one |
| Web design studio, Accra | Consultant | Website designer | Software company, Internet marketing service |
Tip: search your main keyword on Google Maps ("mobile phone repair Circle") and look at the categories the top three businesses use. You'll see them under the business name. That's free competitor research.
Can I put keywords like "Accra" or "best" in my business name?
No. Your profile name must match your real-world business name. Google's guidelines specifically disallow adding marketing taglines, phone numbers, location details or service descriptions to the name.
I know why people do it. Stuffing "Kofi Electricals – Best Electrician in Kumasi 24/7" into the name sometimes gives a short-term bump. But it also invites competitors to suggest an edit, and it puts your profile at risk of suspension. A suspended profile disappears from Maps, and getting it back is slow and uncertain. It's not worth it.
The legitimate exception: if "Kumasi" or "Pharmacy" really is part of your registered name and your signboard, you can use it. The test is simple. If a customer took a photo of your signboard, would it match the profile name? If yes, you're fine.
How do I get more Google reviews in Ghana without breaking the rules?
Ask every genuine customer, make it easy with a direct link or QR code, and never offer anything in return. That's it. Reviews are one of the few prominence signals you can grow every single week.
What Google bans
Google's prohibited and restricted content policy covers fake engagement. Banned practices include:
- Paid reviews, whether paid in cash or in kind.
- Offering discounts, free products or services in exchange for a review — or for changing or removing a negative one.
- Asking only happy customers for reviews (this is called "review gating").
- Reviews from staff, family or anyone with a conflict of interest.
- Pressuring staff with review quotas or demanding reviews on the spot.
So no "10% off if you give us 5 stars". No buying review bundles on social media. No asking your church WhatsApp group to review a business they've never used. Google removes content that breaks this policy, and you'd be putting the profile you depend on at risk for a few fake stars.
The ethical review system we set up for clients
- Get your review link and QR code. On a computer, open your profile, go to "Read reviews", then "Get more reviews". Google lets you copy a link or download a QR code (if you don't see the QR option on your phone, try a desktop browser).
- Print the QR code at the till, on receipts, on delivery packaging and on the reception desk.
- Add the link to your WhatsApp follow-up. When an order is delivered or a job is finished, send one friendly message: "Thank you for choosing us. If you have a minute, we'd value an honest review here." Notice the word honest. You ask everyone, not just the happy ones.
- Train staff to ask, not to pressure. One sentence at the end of a good interaction. No quotas.
- Reply to every review within a few days. Google recommends prompt, personal, honest replies that address what the customer said, without selling and without sharing private information.
If you already use WhatsApp heavily, my guide to setting up WhatsApp Business properly shows how to save that review message as a quick reply so staff send it in two taps.
How to reply to a bad review
Negative reviews are not a disaster. Customers tend to trust a mix of reviews more than a wall of perfect five-star ratings. What hurts you is silence or a rude reply. Use this pattern:
- Thank them by name and acknowledge the specific issue.
- Apologise where it's fair. Don't argue in public.
- Give a way to resolve it privately: "Please call us on 0XX XXX XXXX and ask for the manager."
- Fix the actual problem. Future customers read the reply as much as the review.
What is NAP consistency, and how do I fix it?
NAP means Name, Address, Phone. NAP consistency means those three details are identical everywhere your business appears online. It helps Google (and AI assistants) trust that all those mentions are the same business, which feeds prominence.
In Ghana, inconsistency usually comes from history: an old number from before you switched networks, a former location in Dansoman when you're now in Kaneshie, a Facebook page someone else created, or a directory listing from 2019.
How to audit your NAP in an afternoon
- Write your official NAP once, exactly as it will appear everywhere. Decide on spelling ("Ltd" or "Limited"), phone format (+233 or 0) and address wording.
- Google your business name in quotes, then your phone number in quotes, then your old phone number. List every place you appear.
- Check your website footer and contact page, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, WhatsApp Business profile, Bing Places, and any Ghanaian business directories you're listed on.
- Update each one to the official NAP. Where you can't edit an old listing, contact the site and ask for an update or removal.
- Add your official NAP to your website as structured data so search engines can read it cleanly.
Don't forget Bing. Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's listing for your location details, used by Bing and Copilot, and it's a quick win while you're updating everything else.
Do Google Business Profile posts and photos actually help?
Yes, mainly because they make your profile more useful and more convincing to the person reading it, which drives calls and direction requests. An active profile also tells customers you're still open — a real worry in a market where businesses close or move without warning.
Posts
Google lets you publish three types of post: updates (news, with an optional photo, video and button), offers (with a title and dates) and events (with start and end dates). Google's posts help page notes that posts older than six months are archived unless a date range is set, so a profile whose last post was in 2024 looks abandoned.
A simple rhythm that works: one post a week. Rotate between a new product or service with a price in cedis, a short customer-friendly tip, an offer with a real end date, and a behind-the-scenes photo. Put a "Call" or "Order online" button on each.
Photos
- Exterior with signboard — so people recognise you when they arrive.
- Interior — so people know what to expect.
- Team at work — faces build trust.
- Products and finished work — real ones, not stock images.
- Add a few new photos every month. Phone camera is fine; daylight and a clean lens matter more than the device.
Products and services
Fill in your services and products with short descriptions and, where you're comfortable, prices in GHS. Relevance comes from detail. A salon that lists "knotless braids", "frontal installation" and "pedicure" gives Google far more to match against than one that just says "salon".
How does my website affect my Google Maps ranking?
Your website backs up your profile. It confirms your name, address, phone and services, it gives Google more content to judge relevance, and it's where serious customers go to check you're real before they spend money.
Here's what your site needs for local SEO to work:
- The same NAP as your profile, in text (not only inside an image), in the footer and on the contact page.
- An embedded Google Map on the contact page and your GhanaPostGPS code.
- A page per main service, written for Ghanaian customers, with prices or price ranges where possible.
- A location page per branch if you have more than one.
- LocalBusiness structured data that matches what's visible on the page.
- A WhatsApp button and click-to-call, because that's how people here contact a business.
- Fast loading on mobile data. If your homepage takes ten seconds on 4G in Kasoa, people leave.
If your current site fails most of that list, a rebuild is often cheaper than patching. We build fast, mobile-first business websites starting at GHS 5,000 for the Starter package (5 pages, basic SEO, SSL, one month support and training) or GHS 6,000 for Professional (10+ pages, CMS, blog, WhatsApp integration, advanced SEO, three months support). Both include the first year of hosting and domain, registered in your name. You can see the exact inclusions on our published price list.

I have branches in Accra, Kumasi and Tema. Do I need one profile or several?
One profile per real, staffed location. Google's guidelines say each separate location with its own staff gets its own profile. Three branches, three profiles.
Rules to follow:
- Use the same brand name on each. Don't add "Kumasi" to the name unless your signboard says it.
- Give each branch its own local phone number where possible. Google prefers a local number under your direct control over a central call-centre line.
- Link each profile to its own location page on your website, not all to the homepage.
- Collect reviews per branch. A Kumasi customer should review the Kumasi profile.
- Don't create profiles for places where you don't have staffed premises. That's the fastest route to suspension.
We work with businesses across the country — in person in Accra and by WhatsApp and video for businesses we support in Kumasi, Tema-based firms, Takoradi and Tamale.
What mistakes get Ghanaian Google Business Profiles suspended or ignored?
These are the most common problems:
- Keyword-stuffed names. "XYZ Ventures Best Printing Accra Cheap" — covered above.
- Home address listed as a shop. If customers can't visit, hide the address and set a service area.
- Virtual office or "registered office" address. Not eligible.
- Bought reviews. They get filtered and can trigger restrictions.
- Duplicate profiles. Created by a former staff member, a customer or a freelancer. Claim or remove them.
- Frequent edits to name, address and category. Especially during verification — Google explicitly warns against it.
- Wrong hours. A customer drives from Adenta to find you closed and leaves a one-star review.
- Phone nobody answers. The listing works; the business doesn't.
- Ownership lost. The person who created it left the company. Recover it using Google's ownership request process and then lock it down with proper owner and manager roles.
- Links to a Facebook page instead of a website. Google's guidelines say the website should represent your business location, not redirect to social media pages.
Should I manage my Google Business Profile myself or hire an agency?
If you have a single location, low competition and a few hours a month, do it yourself using this guide. If you're in a crowded category in Accra, have several branches, or have already been suspended, get help — but make sure you keep ownership.
Depending on the scope we agree, our local SEO and digital marketing service, from GHS 1,500 a month, can cover:
- Profile audit, clean-up of category, name, hours, attributes and pin.
- Verification support, including preparing your video.
- Duplicate and NAP clean-up across the web.
- Weekly posts and monthly photo updates.
- A review system: QR codes, WhatsApp templates, reply drafts for your approval.
- Website fixes: location pages, structured data, speed, WhatsApp click tracking.
- A monthly report showing calls, website clicks and direction requests from your profile — the numbers that actually matter.
Why do I believe we're the best web design company in Ghana for this kind of work? Not because we say so. Because you can check: our prices are published, not "call for a quote"; you own your domain, code, content and Google profile; we build Mobile Money into the sites we make; our studio is at 111 New Town Road in Accra, and you can walk in Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00 or Saturday 10:00 to 14:00; and our work is public. We've built for an Accra hotel with online booking (San Marino Hotel), insurers such as SIC Insurance PLC and Hollard Ghana, a school (Preset Pacesetters SHS) and online stores like Manjaro Store and Adjetman Sneakers. You can look at the live sites in our portfolio and judge for yourself.
And if you'd rather do it yourself, that's fine too. Use this guide, and call us when you hit a wall.
Your 30-day Google Business Profile action plan
If you only do one thing after reading this, do this plan.
Week 1: Foundations
- Search Google Maps for your business and claim any existing listing.
- Set up the profile with a business-owned Google account.
- Fix the name to match your signboard exactly.
- Choose the right primary category using competitor research.
- Place the pin on your entrance and add your GhanaPostGPS code.
- Start verification, and prepare your video if offered.
Week 2: Complete the profile
- Write a short description within the character limit Google shows you: who you serve, what you do, where, and your landmark. No links, no keyword stuffing.
- Add hours, including weekend and special hours for public holidays.
- Add all services or products with short descriptions.
- Upload at least 10 real photos.
- Add staff or your agency as managers. Keep yourself as owner.
Week 3: Consistency
- Run the NAP audit and fix every listing you control.
- Update your website footer, contact page and structured data.
- Claim your Bing Places listing with the same details.
Week 4: Momentum
- Download your review QR code and print it.
- Add the review link to your WhatsApp quick replies.
- Reply to every existing review.
- Publish your first post, and schedule one a week going forward.
- Note your starting numbers (calls, website clicks, direction requests) so you can measure progress next month.
Then repeat weeks 3 and 4 forever. Local SEO is not a one-off job. It's a habit.
How long does it take to rank on Google Maps in Ghana?
There's no fixed timeline, and anyone who guarantees "top 3 in 7 days" is guessing. Verification review alone can take up to five working days. After that, how quickly you climb depends on your category, how many competitors are nearby, how complete their profiles are, and how fast you earn genuine reviews.
What I can tell you is the pattern. Fixing a wrong category or a misplaced pin can change things quickly, because you've removed a blocker. Building prominence through reviews, posts and a stronger website is gradual. Measure month on month, not day by day.
If you want this done properly and you want to keep full ownership of everything we touch, ask our Accra team to review your profile or call or WhatsApp us on +233 20 963 6158, and we'll show you exactly what's holding back your Google Business Profile in Ghana.
